People often us algorithms to teach someone to solve the Rubik’s Cube. A lot of people don’t like learning algorithms. To learn the Rubik’s Cube without algorithms means you will have to memorise the hand moves instead. I first learnt o solve the Rubik’s Cube by memorising the hand moves.

I have a very good memory and I can memorise algorithms as easily as I can hand moves. There are many methods of solving the Rubik’s Cube and each one has instructions to solve the cube. Some algorithms of certain solving methods are a lot harder to learn than others.

This is because they are longer and have more abbreviations. As a beginner to the Rubik’s Cube it is best for ou to learn algorithms.

You need to learn the most simple algorithms if you want to learn to solve the cube as quickly as possible.

You will also find learning the cube is more enjoyable by doing this. I first learnt to solve the Rubik’s Cube by The Long Layer Method. This method is the easiest way to learn to solve the Rubik’s Cube. It requires you to learn a maximum of 10 algorithms to solve the Rubik’s Cube.

Most of these algorithms are of about 8 moves. The consist of single or double moves of a particular file. By files I mean the Right, Left, Front, Back and Upper and Downer files. By using these algorithms the cube will be solved in a maximum of 120 moves.

There are many other Rubik’s Cube solving methods that require more complex algorithms to solve the Rubik’s Cube. These such solving methods include The Lars Petrus Method, The Waterman Method and

The Fridrich Method. Another reason that makes some Rubik’s Cubes solving methods harder to learn than others is the amount of algorithms that need to be learnt. The Fridrich Method requires you to learn 120 algorithms for you to solve the Rubik’s Cube.

## Move Notation

Before you learn my Rubik’s Cube Tutorial it is advisable to learn the move notations. Move notation is the symbol that signifies the movement of a particular side of the cube. To begin with you will learn all the sides of the cube.

F = Front

The Front is the side of the cube that faces you.

B = Back

The Back is the side opposite the front.

U = Upper

The Upper is the side at the top of the cube.

D = Down

The Down is the side at the bottom of the cube or the side that’s opposite the top of the cube.

L = Left

The Left is the side on the left of the front.

R = Right

The Right is the side on the right of the front.

f = Front two layers

These Front two layers are the side facing you and the layer after it which is the middle layer.

b = Back two layers

These Back two layers are the side opposite the front and the layer after it which is the middle layer.

u = Up two layers

These Up two layers are the side at the top and the layer after it which is the middle layer.

d = Down two layers

These Down two layers are the side at the bottom and the layer after it which is the middle layer.

l = Left two layers

These Left two layers are the side on the left of the front and the layer after it which is the middle layer.

r = Right two layers

These Right two layers are the side on the right of the front and the layer after it which is the middle layer.

x = (rotate) means to rotate the whole cube on R. y = (rotate) means to rotate the whole cube on U.

z = means to rotate the whole cube on F.

When the symbol (‘) follows a letter, it means you must turn that side in the anti – clockwise direction.

For example U’ means to turn the upper side one quarter turn in the anti- clockwise direction.

If a letter is written without a symbol, it means you must turn that side in the clockwise direction.

Therefore U means to turn the upper side one quarter turn in the clockwise direction.

A letter followed by a 2 or a small 2 that’s not touching the line means to turn that side two quarter turns or an 180 degree turn.

Rubik’s cube algorithms

The x, y, and z are used to indicate that the whole cube should be turned about one of its axes , corresponding to R, U, and F turns respectively.

If x, y, and z are primed, it means that the cube must be rotated in the opposite direction.

When they are squared, it means the cube must be rotated 180 degrees.

## Middle layer turns

For methods that use middle – layer turns (particularly corners – first methods) there is ‘’MES’’ extension to the notation where letters M,E and S denote middle layer turns. These notations were used in Marc Waterman’s Algorithm.

This Middle layer is the layer between L and R.

E = Equator

S = Standing

This Standing layer is the layer between F and B.
